IMG-4264.JPGScreenshot 2017-08-24 at 1.58.16 PM.png

We were learning about puns for the past few days, which is a play of words. Our teacher introduced us to puns using, “brainwashing.” She showed us the literal meaning which was washing an actual brain however the pun was to manipulate or make someone do something for you. I used google to help create my pun which says, “What do you mean I’m not a bear? - I have all the koalafications. That pun has just switched the word “quali” in qualifications to koala.

๐ŸŽˆ Balloon volleyball ๐ŸŽˆ

BeFunky Collagek.jpg

While we were playing volleyball outside it started to rain. Our teacher already had a plan in case it would rain. Since we were inside now we were unable to play with the ball so we used balloons to play volleyball. Another twist to the game was that we had to stay on our bottoms and we could only shuffle along the floor to get the balloon. I enjoyed playing this game and it was a great way to end the Friday.

Mr Hendricks's challenge

BeFunky Collage.jpg

For a few days our principal gave us a challenge to predict whether he can lift someone just by his thumb. On Friday Mr Hendricks put his challenge to the test, and brought out a lever and fulcrum to lift one of the children. He positioned the piece of wood, with his thumb steady on one side and a student on the other. To our surprise Mr Hendricks pushed down on the lever with his thumb and suddenly the boy went up. I was amazed at the sight of him “lifting” the boy.

My simple machine

IMG_20170815_074824.jpg

For our topic study we were learning about simple machines. We were told to make a toy using one of the two simple machines, pulley or wheel and axle. I chose to make mine with a pulley.  I had a hard time making a toy so I used YouTube to help me with my ideas. Here are the tools I used:

  1. Cardboard
  2. Bottle cap
  3. Chop stick
  4. Water bottle
  5. String

Including the pulleys and wheel and axle there are actually six simple machines, which are:

  1. Gears
  2. Lever
  3. Wedge
  4. Screw
  5. Pulley
  6. Wheel and axle

Vocabulary with integers~

This week we were introduced to integers, and these were two activities with vocabulary linked with integers. I found the first activity a bit challenging because I didn’t read the clues correctly and it involved a lot of thinking. Throughout most of the time I was partly confused, however I went over the clues again and finally got the correct answer. I learnt many words from the two activities such as a “plus sign” in front of a number indicates that it is a positive number and that when you find the “absolute value” of an integer you’re removing it’s sign. Personally I think that these activities were great to learn off of  since it helped expand my vocabulary on integers.

Why is there a need for a fire drill/safety?

Fire drills happen so that everyone knows what to do in a real fire. A fire drill shows the quickest, easiest and safest way to exit a building. Fire drills give an understanding of how things would be if there was a real fire. It is unexpected because you never know when an actual fire may happen.

Firstly, is the planning. In order to get out safely everyone must know which way to exit, which will only happen if they did some planning. The plan should indicate which way is the quickest and where the correct exit door is. If one does not have a plan or way of getting out when there’s a fire, a fire drill should help them to understand.

Secondly, it helps to check if the equipment for a fire is working perfectly. When there is a fire drill the alarms must work correctly so that everyone can be alerted straight away. Checking that the equipment all work would help to get you out of the building quickly and safely. If everything is working it does make a difference to the chance of surviving in a real fire.

Thirdly, is the safety. Fire drills are a special part to everyone's safety. When a fire drill goes on everyone should be able to evacuate the building safely without any harm. Also to avoid panic in case of a real fire. The safe place or assembly point is where everyone should go once they have evacuated the building, it is a place to check who is injured and who is still in the building. It is also a place away from the fire.

In conclusion fire drills are done to keep everyone intact when a real fire occurs. Fire can catch onto many things and make a huge forest of fire, which is why everyone should have fire drills. Planning a way to get out of a fire and checking that all the equipment is working could give you a longer time on earth.

Meeting up with my goals

Reading blog post.png

For the past two weeks during the reading time, I have been working on my reading activities. I completed 4/6 activities in the time frame as instructed. I did this because one of my reading goals is to find, select and retrieve information from the text. Due to most of the activities having something to do with the text, I read it again thoroughly to get more information which helped me to get my answers. I learnt about the definitions of many words like patent, which is a lisence or rights on your product so that your ideas wont be stolen.

In the middle block, we were learning a Maori song from Ms Maude. Every Tuesday she comes into our class to teach us Te Reo Maori. The song that we sang was called E Te Ariki, it’s also a hฤซmene or hymn in English.

A volleyball area

Today in the morning session a few boys went out to help our principal clear out an area. Due to the heavy rain our field is out of bounds which is why our principal wanted to mark a volleyball area on the ground. However the ground had heavy logs which is why the boys had to go out to help. The fact that they were struggling was hilarious but I do understand that the logs are heavy so I understand.

Party pies

Today we finally finished the second part of the two lesson task. We spent a lot of time with the pastries but finished our party pies happily. I enjoyed making this as my partner helped me finish up a lot of things. Since I had the same initials as someone else in the kitchen I wrote a X.

๐Ÿ• Pizza for winter blogging ๐Ÿ•

IMG-4181 (1).JPG

Today Miss Collins shouted pizza for our class to eat for lunch. Three out of the four children completed the Winter Learning Journey which is why we got the pizza. The Winter Learning Journey was mades so that everyone can continue on with their learning even though it’s the holiday. I didn’t do the winter learning journey because I knew I wouldn’t have enough time to finish the blogging since I have to look after my younger sibling and other personal things.

Rounding to the nearest tenth

Screenshot 2017-08-03 at 9.46.03 AM.png

This morning I was doing an activity about rounding the decimal to the nearest tenth. I enjoyed doing this activity as we’ve already learnt about this when we were doing our math. I also found that this activity was fairly easy because I understood when our teacher was teaching.

Football skills

BeFunky Collage.jpg

Every Wednesday the senior side of the school play a sport. This morning we played football, at our usual time. Our coach, Steve taught us some skills on how to move the ball with your foot. These are a few of the skills he taught:

  1. Control the ball using the outside, inside, sole and lace part of the foot
  2. Use your body to defend the ball
  3. Position yourself about a leg away from the ball so it’s easy to kick and retrieve
  4. Refrain yourself from kicking the ball with your toes (or you’ll have no control)

I think I played pretty well. I wouldn’t say I was great but I do think that I did well.  Out of all the skills I probably could only do two correctly. Since it was our first practice at football i’m not holding myself down for only being able to do two skills, yet I know could have did better.

I think football is somewhat similar to basketball. When dribbling with the ball, in both sports it is advised to keep your eyes up. Also when you pass the ball over to a teammate it can coincidently it could just go into the goal.

I found the game really fun to play. I enjoyed it as it was a sport that isn’t played as much at our school. When I was in with my team, we worked really well with each other. I did get hit with the ball a few times but I still had a great time.
