Card match game

Walt: revise fractions, decimals and percentages.

On the mat we were playing a card game. We had to make a set of cards with the one we chose from the beginning. I was a bit shaky at first because I was not familiar with the game. It was a little easy because we were learning our fractions, decimals and percentages for two days now. Next I would like to learn how to divide 3 digit numbers by one number.

Walt: play long shots in snag golf.

On Thursday our snag golf coach - “Hugh” was showing us how to play big shots on the grass. We first had to find our balance and our position had to be spot on. Our right hand had to be on the bottom of the putt and our left hand had to be on the top. But if students were left handed then they would have done the opposite. Our feet would be still until we swung our shot, once we did swing we had to twist our shoulder. Then we would follow through but the most important thing Hugh kept on telling us was “your eyes have to always be on the ball”. I was not very good at it because my hand coordination was not right and my eyes weren't always on the ball.

Corn survey

For the past weeks Room8 has been studying “corn maths” . We made a survey asking Room8 and two Room 11 children how they like their corn. We also had the staff choices in it. I like my corn steamed, it's only because I haven't tried it any other way.

I used “create a graph”  to draw a pie graph and bar graph.

This online tool was difficult at first but then I got the hang of it. I had a few attempts to make sure I knew what to do. I really like this tool and I plan on using it more in time. Next I would like to learn how to divide 3 digit numbers by 1 digit.

Doing maths with corn

Screenshot 2016-03-11 at 9.41.59 AM.png

Alyssa and I were estimating the parts of a cob of sweetcorn. We first had to estimate the silk, husk, cob length and the cob rows. Then we counted to get actual amount. Our estimate with the husks was very close but the other estimates were way off. It was challenging because I didn't know that you had to use tidy numbers. We had to use tidy numbers. Working in a group helped me because I was not familiar with estimating but then Alyssa helped me. Next I would like to learn how to divide 3 digit numbers.

Path of: Maize to New Zealand

Walt: write an information report

We can infer that James Cook brought maize to New Zealand in 1772. Then the maoris came around and replaced the crops with potatoes. However the maoris didn’t just plant potatoes, many more. The first corn to be planted in New Zealand was around 1772, near the time Europeans brought maize.

New Zealand's climate is suitable for planting corn because there is not just one type of maize there is a whole lot more. Summer is also great for planting corn throughout September - February. The soil temperature for growing maize should be between 16c and 35c.

Corn was shared back in the day by trading in for crops since money had not been made.

The uses of corn was by making food like popcorn, flour, hot stew, mixed vegetables etc.  Even Though there was no electronics everyone found a way to cook their corn.

Be a true friend

Walt: write a powerful introduction
Purpose: to entertain and share on blog
Success criteria:
  1. Use “W” words
  2. describe character/characters

Introduction:  As the sun went down dark purple clouds started to appear roughly into the sky. Mariana a high school teacher had her favorite PJ's on with her pink socks with a little heart shape on the bottom. While she was at home a disturbing sound echoed into her room, as she questioned what that sound could be Mariana kept on hearing that same sound over and over again.

Mariana became fed up with that sound, so she opened her door to find a bunch of boys bullying a very young girl for some of her money. But to think it was boys from her class. Mariana marched right to them and growled out “Mark, you and your friends should know better. I will be speaking with all your parents”. Mark’s friends looked at mark and said “Bye”, the two boys ran off leaving Mark all alone.

So after a while Mariana spoke to Mark and asked him why he had chosen to hang out with those boys……….Mark cried out that in his old school he used to get bullied. That's why he wanted to be a bully because he was afraid that he would once again be the one that gets bullied. Mariana told him that true friends wouldnt leave you like what those boys done. Also that if you get bullied try to tell someone so that they can help you,it's what adults and friends are for.

Conclusion:  Mariana finally got his attention but then lost it again. Mark was face down staring at his shoes. Mariana knew that he was still hurting from the unerasable things he had done. After a while Mark was happy and he had a new group of friends that lead him into the right direction.

Grammar Flip a Chip

This exercise was nice because I got to see words that I was unfamiliar with. I finished all of them but i wish i didn't because it was really fun. You have to click a button to flip the coins and then the coins would make up a word, you then drag the word down to the blanks to but it  has to fit in with the story.

Addition Pyramid

Screenshot 2016-03-04 at 9.43.34 AM.png

In this game it was teaching me how to use/do pyramids in addition. It was not that hard because it was doing the adding for me.  I had to just write down 3 numbers, then it would automatically add up everything to get the answer at the top. Afterwards it would come up like the screenshot above.
