Migration of Maori

According to Ms. Maude back in the day the Maori would use waka’s to get from place to place. There were 7 main waka’s which were Aotea, Tainui, Te Arawa, Tokomoru, Kurahaupo, Takitimu and Mataatua. In Hawaii a man named Kupe had a love for octopuses. He chased after one all through the pacific when suddenly he had found a land which was the North Island. Which he named, Aotearoa. Kupe decided to go back to Hawaii and get some chiefs to come with him to claim the land. One navigator (Ngatoroirangi) from the Tainui waka helped the people in the Te Arawa waka get around since they had lost their navigator. While Ngatoroirangi was going around the coast he was naming the places they had passed.
